“Catfish” has been one of MTV’s most popular television shows for the past four years, but what many viewers don’t realize is that the show actually started as a movie. “Catfish” the movie tells the story of Nev Schulman, host of the television show, who himself got catfished — meaning someone online pretended to be someone he/she was not. “Catfish” the movie is available online in two different formats: DVD and Blu-ray.

There aren’t a lot of differences between the DVD and Blu-ray versions of “Catfish” the movie, as both versions feature the same bonus features and running time. The Blu-ray version of “Catfish” only looks marginally better than the DVD, but this makes sense — as a documentary filmed in 2007, “Catfish” was not shot on expensive cameras and doesn’t feature any CGI. However, that’s not to say the Blu-ray version doesn’t look better — the picture quality is slightly better on the Blu-ray version. Both versions are roughly similar in terms of audio experience, so which version you get boils down to your own personal preference.

“Catfish” doesn’t feature a lot in the way of special features, boasting only an interview with the filmmakers as its sole bonus feature. This also makes sense considering there wasn’t very much left on the cutting room floor in this documentary. Nearly everything made its way to the movie itself! While some fans may be disappointed at having only one bonus feature, it provides a nice closing chapter to the story of “Catfish.”

If you’re a fan of “Catfish” the television show, Nev’s personal story that paved the way for the series is well worth checking out. Likewise, if you’re looking for a story about some of the more nefarious parts of online dating, you’ll find “Catfish” well worth your time. Either way, you’ll find yourself on the edge of your seat!
